Jitendra Swarup, M.D.
Robotic - Assisted Laser Cataract Surgery & Laser Vision Correction
Jitendra Swarup, M.D., is a board-certified ophthalmologist who has performed more than 70,000 cataract procedures during more than 30 years of surgical practice. After decades serving eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia, where patients traveled significant distances to seek his expertise, he now brings that experience to Sarasota and surrounding communities.
Dr. Swarup’s career spans the evolution of modern cataract and refractive surgery, from early excimer laser technology to advanced robotic, laser-assisted cataract surgery and customizable lens implantation. His practice includes astigmatism correction, toric, multifocal, extended-depth-of-focus and Light Adjustable Lens technologies, LASIK and PRK. Experience across generations of technology gives him an unusually broad perspective on how different options perform in different eyes.
For most patients, the goal is clear, comfortable vision. Using advanced diagnostic testing, Dr. Swarup evaluates each eye’s health, anatomy, previous surgery, and other factors that may influence the result. He explains how lens options may affect distance and near vision, night driving, glare, visual quality, and the potential to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses. Rather than defaulting to the newest technology, he selects the approach suited to each patient’s eyes, priorities, and lifestyle—from reading and driving to golf, boating, travel, and computer work.
His expertise extends to dense and complex cataracts, previous LASIK or PRK, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, challenging anatomy, and other conditions that may affect lens selection, refractive targets, or visual quality. Dr. Swarup utilizes state-of-the-art laser technology, sophisticated automation, and AI-enabled surgical planning to deliver highly personalized vision care.
During his ophthalmology residency at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, where he served as Chief Resident, Dr. Swarup participated in early clinical work involving excimer laser technology during its FDA-approval era.
Dr. Swarup built and led Albemarle Eye Center, which developed under his leadership into a five-location comprehensive eye-care organization serving eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. He later served as Regional Medical Director for US Eye’s North Carolina and Virginia region.
As founder and principal investigator of Albemarle Clinical Trials, he participated in prospective, randomized, multicenter and FDA-monitored research involving cataract surgery, advanced lenses, presbyopia, glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, and emerging ophthalmic technologies.
Today, Dr. Swarup combines exceptional surgical experience, advanced lens planning, complex-case expertise, clinical research, and physician leadership to provide state-of-the-art, individualized care. His goal in Sarasota is not simply to treat cataracts, but to help patients achieve the quality of vision needed to remain active, independent, and fully engaged in life.
